  1.                    TEST DRIVE

  4. Follow the procedure below and you will have 
  5. gained the essence of LOCATE.  "<cr>" means 
  6. "carriage return". 
  7.  
  8. 1) Boot your system with MS-DOS (or PC-DOS) 
  9. version 2.0 or later.

  11. 2) Remove your "A:" diskette and insert LOCATE.
  12.  
  13. 3) Type "index<cr>".  You are now indexing the 
  14. LOCATE release disk.  There are approximately 20 
  15. files and 100,000 characters that will be 
  16. indexed.  You can gauge how long INDEX will take 
  17. on your files from this "test drive".  INDEX is 
  18. fast but you will need to assess the 
  19. cost/benefit relationship in determining how 
  20. often to update your indices.

  22. 4) Type "locate test drive<cr>".  You see a list 
  23. of names of the files containing the words 
  24. "test" and "drive" in the same file.
  25.  
  26. 5) Type "locate drive test<cr>".  You see the 
  27. same list.  Word order is irrelevant.  What 
  28. counts is whether the file contains the keywords 
  29. in any location and in any order.

  31. 6) Type "locate a test drive<cr>".  LOCATE 
  32. didn't find the words "a", "test", and "drive" 
  33. in any file.  In fact LOCATE never finds 
  34. "common" words.  "Common words" are, by 
  35. definition, those found in the file "WORDS.INX".  
  36. LOCATE requires that all the words in the list 
  37. be present in the file.
  38. has the words "rock" and "roll" in it.  The 
  39. other file names returned by LOCATE do not.  We 
  40. call this artifact a "false hit".  Used 
  41. normally, this should not be a problem.  The 
  42. probability of "false hits" decreases with the 
  43. number of keywords used with LOCATE.  We call 
  44. keyword lists sufficiently short to generate 
  45. false hits "under specified".  It does not hurt 
  46. to "over specify" lists and can reduce the 
  47. annoyance of false hits when many files are 
  48. indexed.

  50. 8) Type "locate strategy".  You will see the 
  51. file names containing "strategy".  By keeping 
  52. the documentation on line you can use LOCATE as 
  53. an online help facility.
